Androids have become a reality
Human looking robots have always been a fantasy in the modern world. They are fictitious characters in movies, cartoons, comic strips, video games and children’s books. We dream that one day they’ll live alongside us and aid us in our everyday lives being caregivers and companions as depicted in the movie “I, Robot”. Yet, we fear that when that day comes, they would’ve have acquired far too much intelligence and will want to overthrow the human race. All these of course, are part of the imaginative mind that seeks to captivate and entertain. Yet, what was once only part of a dream is slowly taking form.

Many of us know or have heard of the technological advances and creativity of the Japanese. Hence, it comes as no surprise that they should create the very first android.
She’s able to communicate with visitors and display human-like behaviour albeit a little stiff. However, I can’t judge the extent of her language capabilities since I do not understand Jap. Also, she is developed more for amusement and research rather than any real-world application so counter staff, no fear yet!
The development of andriods have taken a leap when real-world applications surface. Who would’ve thought that the widespread commercialisation of androids will take place in Arabia? Meet Camel, a robot camel rider used in camel racing.

Camel racing has a long tradition in Arabia. In the past, children from Sudan were sold to be camel riders. As a light camel rider meant that the camel will be able to run faster, these children were often starved and ill-treated. Also, many were trampled to death in races. The UN stepped in and now, androids replaced children as camel riders. In my opinion, the most amazing thing about Camel is it’s ability to emulate the whipping actions of camel jockeys – 3 different actions for 3 different commands. However, it’s competitor robot which is far less sophisticated with only a single whipping action seems to gain greater popularity with the locals. A proof of Occam’s Razor, the simplest solution is most likely to be correct.
