Apple after having secured a place among the mobile devices with the iPhone, seems to have set sight winning on the portable gaming race.
Kotaku highlighted how Apple took shots at the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP during a recent event. Their argument was “the competitors’ games were too expensive, the platforms lacked a multi-touch interface, have no “App Store” and “no iPod.” But as reported, it’s a little outdated claim. Apple went on to boast of the number of titles compared to the competitors.

You can’t just compare sheer numbers of games – you need to be qualitative with it as well.
One might also be able to argue that the “No IPOD” is a outdated claim too. The PSP has been able to play music from day one and now the DSi can to.
Ya know- here’s the funny thing. I know people who own an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Most of them fit into one of 3 categories: 1. Rich kid who gets anything s/he deems cool and new and expensive (aka, anything Apple makes.) 2. People who wanted a new phone/mp3 player and thought “why not?” but the only actual things they have from the app store? Translators, maps, and not actual games. 3. Gamers who also needed a new phone/mp3 player and have never ever even downloaded an app that wasn’t free onto it.I actually know at least 3 people who got rid of their iPhone after only a week or less, while I know people who have sat around playing their DS or PSP all day. You don’t see that with the iPhone. Period.
Apple is delusional to think that having 21000 pieces of shovelware made by idiots in their basement counts against PSP and Ds games is just bloody insane. Keep telling yourselves that apple, that your ipod is a gaming machine, because the touch interface has worked in ONE game that i own so far, and thats StarDefense. [….] Just because developers can make money on the platform dosn’t mean its a gaming machine. its more like a “trick casual people who don’t know any better machine.
Anytime someone starts talking about how great the iPhone games are, I immediatly know to not ever discuss games with them. They get all puffy and start talking about how many people have them… 32 Million people have HIV/AIDs and I don’t want that crap either.

They continue with their claim of iPod Touch being a gaming platform when Steve Jobs explains why iPod Touch doesn’t have a built-in camera.
“Originally,” Jobs tells The New York Times, “we weren’t exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine.
Kotaku followers are equally ruthless in their comments this time:
Meh. With Apple’s history of random hardware “upgrades” even $199 is still a bit high. Just look how many versions of the iPhone have been released already. Are we expected to drop that kind of cash every time the touch will be upgraded with more memory to “support better games”?
You just KNOW Steve Jobs is gonna change his mind in a couple of months…
He did the exact same thing with Video playability on the classic iPod
The iTouch being “too thin” for a camera is not a valid excuse
With that many owners of iPod Touch + iPhone, the sheer size of the install base makes that iPod Touch platform a very viable platform for business. While these owners might be what the gaming elite label as casual players, we have learnt in recent years that casual games is serious business. If you ever doubt that, look at Ubisoft’s sales for their Petz and Imaginez series.
With that said, I think the triple A games will still stay on “proper” gaming platforms and casual gamers will continue to fuel the game industry in their own way. ;)
